La Gonave, Haiti – Dr. Janice Cotrone proudly announces the establishment of Higher Mission Inc, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the School of Nursing in La Gonave, Haiti. With this new initiative, Dr. Cotrone solidifies her commitment to providing quality education and healthcare services to the community.
Since Dr. Cotrone started the School of Nursing in 2012, she has single-handedly raised operational funds through the nonprofit organization, Global Partners. It was a matter of not having any other better non-profit options at the time. However, due to serious operational differences of opinion, Dr. Cotrone has decided to collaborate directly with the school, maintaining her position as the Dean, and transitioning Higher Mission Inc as the primary funding source.
Addressing potential misconceptions, Dr. Cotrone emphasizes, “The School of Nursing in La Gonave, Haiti and I have been working together for over 20 years. I’ve lived in Haiti helping the community for over 30 years. We are not parting ways with the school or the community now! I have made this my life’s mission, and I owe it to the students to not allow these rumors and obstacles with non-profit support to get in the way of their education, and I will not let that happen.”
Dr. Cotrone’s dedication to the School of Nursing has been unwavering throughout the years. She has tirelessly raised funds, navigating from church to church and donor to donor to ensure the school’s financial sustainability. Under her leadership, the School has grown exponentially, with every dollar raised contributing to its success.
From an educational standpoint, Dr. Cotrone has played a pivotal role in securing the school’s accreditation and implementing effective teaching strategies. As a result, students now achieve a remarkable 92.3% passing rate on the Registered Nurse exam (the average is about 30 percentage points lower), paving the way for them to pursue fulfilling careers in addition to obtaining their full Bachelor of Science degrees. Although there are many schools using the term ‘university’ to describe their schools, the School of Nursing is one of the only accredited programs in the region.
Reflecting on the school’s achievements, Dr. Cotrone humbly acknowledges, “Our results at the School of Nursing are a full team effort. I’m so proud of my faculty and students and what we’ve accomplished. I will do everything I can to keep it going, too.”
Indeed, Dr. Cotrone’s leadership and dedication have been instrumental in shaping the School of Nursing into the esteemed institution it is today. Without her tireless efforts, the School’s remarkable progress would not have been possible.
