The three principles of Mind, Consciousness and Thought were first uncovered by Sydney Banks, a Scottish-born welder with only a 9th-grade education. He made the move to British Columbia, Canada in the early 1970s.
The Principles form the foundation of human experience and our perception of the world. These intricately linked ideas shape and influence each other, and a deeper understanding of them can lead to a better comprehension of ourselves and the environment.
The first principle, the mind, can be defined as the mental faculty responsible for perception, thought, emotion, and all other conscious experiences. It’s what makes us who we are and gives us our unique perspective on the world. The mind is often thought of as a separate entity from the physical body, with many philosophers and scientists exploring the relationship between the two.
The second principle, consciousness, refers to the state of being aware of one’s thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. Consciousness is what allows us to experience the world and is the foundation of our subjective experience. It’s the awareness of our thoughts, emotions, and sensations that gives us a sense of self and allows us to understand the world around us.
The third principle, thought, is the process of generating mental images, concepts, and ideas. Thoughts can be conscious or unconscious, voluntary or involuntary, and can take many forms, such as memories, imaginations, or abstract concepts. Thoughts are the building blocks of our experiences and beliefs, and they shape the way we see the world and interact with others.
Dr Terry explained the Principles below:
“We can teach the 3 Principles using metaphors like this
“The mind is a vast expanse of deep blue, filled with turbulent waves and mysterious depths. Consciousness stands tall like a shining beacon, guiding us to explore and understand our own internal seas. Thoughts are like little vessels, their sails filled with the winds of emotion and insight. As we sail through the vastness of our minds, we can uncover the hidden gems of our mental health”
Using these metaphors, 3 Principles practitioners can describe, mind, consciousness and thought to their clients in a more understandable way. This approach can help clients gain an insight and thus improve their mental health”.
